The town of Kilwinning, known as "the crossroads of Ayrshire", has a history tracing back to the seventh century. It had an economic base in coal mining, quarrying, iron-founding and textile manufacture, including being the original home of Pringle Knitwear. The 2001 census recorded a population of 15,908, increasing to 16,109 by 2011.
