Kahramanmaraş (; or simply Maraş Province) is a province of Turkey. Its provincial capital is the city of Kahramanmaraş, the traffic code is 46. [edit] History
Kahramanmaraş was known historically as Maraş and was a settlement since pre-historic times. Historically prior to 1920, many Ottoman citizens of Armenian ethnicity lived in this province. However, in April 1915 the Ottoman military deported Armenians from the province and Zeytun, initially as a strategic measure. The deportees were forcibly moved to the Konya area and later to the Zor and Urfa regions. Armenian property in Marash was seized and given to Turkish Muslims. The city received the title of Kahraman (Heroic) from the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) for the heroic struggle by the local civilian population against the occupying English and then French armed forces after the First World War (see Sütçü İmam Incident [1]). It was one of the first "free" towns after World War I. After French troops withdrew, in February–May 1920 there were massacres of the remaining Armenian population who had been protected by the French presence. At the Paris Peace Conference in Versailles, Lord Curzon listed those massacres as a reason to punish the Turks. [edit] Research Tips
