the following text is based on an article in Wikipedia

Dunnington is a village and civil parish now within the City of York and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England, approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) east of York city centre. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 3,194.

From 1894 until 1935, Dunnington was located in Escrick Rural District. In 1935 the Escrick Rural District was abolished and its place was taken by Derwent Rural District which administered the local area until the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974. From 1974 until 1996, Deighton was in the Selby District of North Yorkshire. The parish includes the hamlet of Grimston, located to the west of Dunnington itself.

Dunnington village was established before the Norman conquest of 1066. Over the centuries the land around the village has been irrigated and became a major area for growing chicory. (Source:British History Online)

Historically, Deighton was an ecclesiastical parish in the wapentake of Ouse and Derwent.
