Craigmillar is located in the former parish of Duddingston within the City of Edinburgh.

The community has its roots in the 14th and 15th century and the building of Craigmillar Castle which, for a short time, housed Mary, Queen of Scots. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the local aquiferd were found to provide excellent water for brewing and seven separate breweries were founded in the area. The last of these survived until 1987.

Throughout the 20th century Craigmill has been the location of public housing schemes providing homes for people working in the centre of Edinburgh and elsewhere.
