Chaldon is a village in Surrey, England, high on the North Downs. Chaldon is centred 1.5 miles (2.4 km) WSW of Caterham town, 15.8 miles (25.4 km) south of central London and, since 1974, falls within the boundaries of Tandridge District, just south of the border with the London Borough of Croydon.

The civil parish of Chaldon fell within the Reigate Poor Law Union upon its creation in 1837, subsequently coming under control of Reigate Rural Sanitary District from 1875 and Reigate Rural District from 1894 until the rural district's abolition in 1933. It then became part of the Godstone Rural District until 1 April 1974 when the major local government reorganisation brought Chaldon under the newly formed Tandridge District.

the following text is based on another article in Wikipedia

In 1933 Caterham and Warlingham Urban District absorbed the entirely hilltop segment of Chaldon from the defunct Reigate Rural District. In so doing, Chaldon shed 404 acres (1.63 km2) to the parish of Bletchingley and 268 acres (1.08 km2) to Coulsdon to the south and north respectively.

The part of Chaldon parish that joined Caterham and Warlingham was later renamed Whyteleafe. The new parish already its own railway station and church, and had always been identifiable as a village.

For more information, see the EN Wikipedia article Chaldon. Chaldon's parish church dates back to before the writing of the Domesday Book in 1086 AD and contains a large wall painting of around 1170.

History

  • The Victoria History of the County of Surrey is a series of three volumes available online through British History Online. The volumes were written over the past hundred or so years by a number of authors and cover various sections of Surrey. A list of the volumes and what each contains can be found under the source Victoria History of the County of Surrey. Both volumes 3 and 4 contain areas which are part of Greater London and parts of modern Surrey.

Maps

  • The National Library of Scotland has a website which provides maps taken from the Ordnance Survey England & Wales One-Inch to the Mile series of 1892-1908 as well as equivalent maps for Scotland itself. The immediate presentation is a "help" screen and a place selection screen prompting the entry of a location down to town, village or parish level. These screens can be removed by a click of the "X". The map is very clear and shows parish and county boundaries and many large buildings and estates that existed at the turn of the 20th century. Magnification can be adjusted and an "overlay feature" allows inspection of the area today along with that of 1900. The specific map from the series can be viewed as a whole ("View this map") and this allows the inspection of the map legend (found in the left hand bottom corner. Becoming familiar with the various facilities of these maps is well worth the trouble.
