History

The city began as a meeting of the roads to Livingston, Georgia, Lyerly, Georgia, and Centre, Alabama. To the east of the city, there is a Civil War site where Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated Abel Streight and his band of raiders. The Cornwall Furnace a Civil war base for confederate troops lies there as well. Weiss Lake Dam was constructed across the Coosa river. The city voters elected (3 to 1) to have alcoholic beverages sold there on June 1, 2010.
