From the Gazetteer for Scotland:

"A residential hamlet on the Solway Firth, Carsethorn lies at the mouth of the River Nith, 10 miles (16 km) south of Dumfries. Carsethorn served as a port for Dumfries from at least the 16th century, with emigrant ships leaving for North America and Australia in the late 18th century. It was further developed from the early 19th century with a Harbour Master's House (c.1815) and a pier for the Dumfries-Liverpool steamer service (1840). After the steamer ceased Carsethorn became a centre for salmon fishing."

Carsethorn was located in the parish of Kirkbean in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
