Carlton is a village in the Borough of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England, since 1934 part of the Carlton with Chellington parish with the adjacent village of Chellington. The River Great Ouse runs just to the north of the village. Nearby places are Harrold, Pavenham, Turvey, Lavendon and Odell.
Carlton's church is Saint Mary the Virgin, dating from 950AD with a font from c. 1150. The church is sited outside the current village.

Carlton was originally an ancient parish in the Willey Hundred of Bedfordshire, England. It was an ancient parish with no subsidiary chapelries or townships. It was made a civil parish in 1866 and in 1894 it became part of the Bedford Rural District.

The website is very useful for finding the ecclesiastical individual parishes within large cities and towns.

There are pages available for all civil parishes, municipal boroughs and other administrative divisions. Descriptions provided are usually based on a gazetteer of 1870-72 which often provides brief notes on the economic basis of the settlement and significant occurences through its history.

The oldest series are very clear at the third magnification offered. Comparing the map details with the GENUKI details for the same area is well worthwhile.
