First organized in 1806, Black River Township once encompassed much of present day Lorain County. By 1824 Black River Twp contained present day Amherst and Brownhelm Twp. Still trying to find just when this township disappeared.

In 1817, surveyors mapped the Black River township containing the City of Lorain followed by the formation of the Elyria township in 1819.
