The Bideford Rural District was comprised of 15 civil parishes surrounding the Municipal Borough of Bideford. It was in existence from 1894 until 1974. It replaced the earlier Bideford Rural Sanitary District which catered for the area's needs during the latter part of the 19th century. In 1974 the area covered by the rural district became part of the current non-metropolitan Torridge District which also serves Bideford, Great Torrington, Northam, and the former Rural Districts of Holsworthy and Torrington.
See the Wikipedia article on Sanitary Districts for an explanation of the term.
