Balmangan lies 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Kirkcudbright at the head of Balmangan Bar on the west side of Kirkcudbright Bay. It was located in the former parish of Borgue.

The remains of a 16th-century tower house lie opposite Balmangan Farm.
