Suburb name derived from Auchenflower House, home of Sir Thomas McIlwraith (1835-1900). Auchenflower was classed as a neighbourhood 1975-86, within Toowong, but obtained suburb status on 16 November 1986. Auchenflower is reported to be a Gaelic word indicating field of flowers.
