Altavista is an incorporated town in Campbell County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,450 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded on the banks of the Staunton River by Henry Lane during the construction of the Virginian Railroad, on land formerly belonging to the Adams family.

The town's early industry was fueled by the Staunton, and became known for its cedar chests, mallets, stoves, and ice. It was also an important tobacco market.

Nearby is a bridge over the Otter River, which was the backdrop of many romantic picnics during the 19th Century.

Colonel Charles Lynch lived in the area during the American Revolution, and the local DAR chapter in Alta Vista was named in his memory.
