Person talk:William Anthony (10)

Watchers

alt. death date [5 September 2011]

According to the NEHGS copy of Vital Record of Rhode Island, there is a separate entry for the death in 1697/8 and the birth in 1676. However, they do not show the page images, only the index record they typed into the database, so the original context is lost. Taking what they show at face value, i.e., that the death record is separate, how does one know it applies to this William Anthony (there being by my quick searching, at least 3 William Anthony's in Portsmouth)? Or did they create two entries to describe one record?

There is only one citation on this page and it is tagged to both the birth and date. This suggests the two entries are connected? Going on the assumption that William Anthony survived past 21 Feb 1697/98, as indicated by him being mentioned in the will and his marriage and other sources, this suggests Arnold made an error.

John Anthony m. Frances Wordell, d/o of William Wordell, and had a son William b. 18 Jul 1676, d. 9 Nov 1757, m. Patience Freeborn (eldest child 1702). (NEHGR, 31:417)

Abraham Anthony m. Alice Woodell, d/o William Woodell, and had a son William b. 31 Oct 1675, d. 28 Dec 1744, m. 14 Mar 1694 Mary Coggeshall and had (among other children born until 1720) William, b. 14 May 1695. (Cutter's New England Families)

These seem to generally agree with what I found in VR of RI.

It seems like the death in 1697/98 would have to be the grandson of Abraham. I didn't see any other Williams in my searching, but it was not an extensive search by any means. --Jrich 09:47, 5 September 2011 (EDT)

I own a copy of the Newport County Vital Records by James N. Arnold. I will see if I can scan that page and post it here. --Susan Irish 23:10, 5 September 2011 (EDT)

Excellent. Thank you. What do you think? It appears Arnold is suggesting both apply to the same person. Something is wrong. Is this a problem that can only be solved by looking at microfilms? --Jrich 00:45, 6 September 2011 (EDT)
