Person talk:Thomas Edmiston (3)

Identity [25 March 2009]

Its hard to tell which Thomas Edmiston in SW VA from the data provided here as there's just not enough data being given to match up with an obvious candidate. There were at least 3 Thomas' in the area during the Revolutionary War period and shortly thereafter.

  • Thomas son of Person:John Edmiston (1) is the most likely candidate, as he was clearly an adult and in the area by 1773 when he signed the Ebbing Springs Call
  • Thomas so of [[Person:William Edmiston (3) is a candidate, though he would have been younger than his cousin Thomas son of John (1)
  • Another candidate is Thomas son of Person:William Edmiston (5) another son of John (1).

John (1) did have a number of sons whose children have not yet been delineated on these pages. There may be other Thomas' among them. William (3) had a brother James, but it is not clear that he came to SW VA. If so, There may be a Thomas among them.

On the otherhand, this Thomas is described as marrying Ann about 1785 in Montgomery County. Even but places Ann's death in Washington. Its possible that Thomas is unrelated to the other Edmiston's in early SWVA, since they were there by 1773 at the latest. (A marriage in Montgomery County in 1785 would seem unlikely for one of the SWVA Edmiston's. On the otherhand, we know that the Edmiston's of SW VA were in adjacent Grayson County roughly 1765-1770/73, but at this point we've little information about them during this brief period on the New River.

I suspect that this person is Thomas Edmiston son of person:John Edmiston (1) and Margaret Buchanan. The data here seems confused, so I'm creating a separate card for Thomas son of John and Margaret. Q 16:42, 5 March 2009 (EST)

Now that we have better data on the children of Col William Edmiston it seems clear that the person of original interest to Gendigger is NOT the daughter of Thomas son of Col. William. GenDiggers original interest was with Ann Edmiston supposed daughter of a Thomas and Margaret Edmiston. This Ann married a William Patterson. According to the note Ann is listed as a married woman in 1789:

William PATTERSON was born in Virginia. He resided in Crockett's Cave, Wythe County, VA before he married Ann Edmiston, daughter of Thomas and Margaret EDMISTON. The first time we find him is October 2, 1782, Montgomery County, VA where he purchased 100 acres Middle Fork of the Holston River. In the Census records of 1782, Montgomery County, VA William and Thomas are both listed. In the Census records of 1789 and 1810 he is not listed just his wife Ann. William and Ann had one son, Andrew PATTERSON.

Thomas son of Col William was not born until 1773, and therefore could not have a married daughter by 1786. I will undo the redirect. Gendigger is no longer monitoring her family tree, but it looks like her line is not connected to the Edmiston's of SW VA in the way that she thought. Q 15:00, 25 March 2009 (EDT)
