Person talk:Samuel Cook (42)

Samuel's marriage(s) to Mary [7 October 2014]

Some followup is needed on the marriage(s) of Samuel Cook to Mary Unknown and/or Mary [widow] Roberts. It is troubling to me that Davis (1870)5 reported a marriage date (14 Jul 1690) which is precisely six years earlier than the VRs reported by later researchers, i.e. 1690 vs. 1696 where a "0" could be misread for a "6" or vice versa. Presumably Davis et al. were also working from VRs for their dates. Since a marriage record has not been presented for Samuel Cook and Mary Unknown, is it possible that either Davis' date belongs to them - or - that there is no Mary Unknown, and the date actually belongs to Samuel Cook and Mary [widow] Roberts? Neither of their previous spouses, Hope (Parker) Cook nor Eli Roberts, have death records presented, so it is not possible to use their death dates as supporting evidence of either marriage date. I see the death VR for Mary Unknown in 1695, but as reported, that record gives us no indication if that "Mary Cook" was married or not, so how do we know that she was a wife of this Samuel Cook? Does anyone have any insight into this conundrum? Has anyone dug any deeper into the VR dates as reported by Jacobus and Barbour? --Cos1776 02:23, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Trust Jacobus. Davis was working more than fifty years earlier than DLJ and is much less likely to have consulted all the original records.--jaques1724 20:03, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
