Person talk:Nathaniel Masterson (1)

Abiel Masterson(s) [13 June 2012]

Is your list of references to Abiel Masterson, meant to be one person, or a list of citations of the name in sources? The marriage record to Isaac Foster in Ipswich would usually have named her as Abiel Bragdon, if she had been married previously. --Brear47 16:08, 13 June 2012 (EDT)

Not exactly sure of the question, but here goes. Based on the extremely limited information we have, Abiel married once, a Foster. A Masterson girl, Sarah not Lydia, married Captain Arthur Bragdon (they had a daughter Abiel among others). The chronology we have makes it questionable that Elizabeth Cogswell could have borne four children after being married for the first time at age 41. Therefore, it is at least a possiblity that "Jonathan Masterson" was not a phantom but an unrecorded son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Cogswell) Masterson. This family has not been well examined, and it may be that there are still records somewhere in Massachusetts or Maine that shed additional light on the matter. It should also be noted that the standard Cogswell genealogy (Jameson, 1874) is not well sourced and may have neglected to address records existing at the time it was written; and Jameson said nothing about Elizabeth beyond naming her husband.--jaques1724 20:50, 13 June 2012 (EDT)
