Person talk:Mary Scott (121)

Wife of Thomas Blakeslee or Elisha Root? [19 October 2012]

The Root Genealogy and the Scott Genealogy both say that Mary, daughter of Richard Scott of Hatfield and Sunderland, married Elisha, son of John Root of Westfield. Jacobus, however, says that Thomas Blakeslee of New Haven and Thomaston married that Mary Scott. The Root Genealogy, p. 332, further says that Mary Scott, wife of Elisha Root, died 15 September 1784, æ. 74, which would have her born about 1710 instead of the 1703 date from Boltwood's Hadley Families. In addition, the two youngest known children of Elisha and Mary (Scott) Root were born in 1750 and 1752 which would place them in the extreme boundary of childbearing years for a woman born in 1703. The tentative conclusion, then, is that Mary daughter of Richard Scott married Captain Thomas Blakeslee (although one wonders how they would have connected with each other), and that the origin of the Mary Scott who married Elisha Root is unknown.--jaques1724 11:42, 19 October 2012 (EDT)

It appears that the Mary who married Elisha Root was this woman's first cousin, also Mary Scott.--jaques1724 06:24, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
