Person talk:Joseph Morse (4)

This page is an utter mess [29 December 2008]

There are a number of us watching this page. It's an utter mess with data that makes absolutely no sense. Can anyone help me make some sense of what this SHOULD be, please?! jillaine 22:50, 28 December 2008 (EST)

I have taken the Watertown VR records and added the info to Category:Morse_in_Massachusetts. This lays out what I can determine of the Morses from the Watertown VR. Please visit that page as we try to figure out what's what. Thanks. jillaine 09:31, 29 December 2008 (EST)
And taking that information, as well as what I could find in NEHGR and the Morse Genealogy, I cleaned this up as best I could. I think there are still some "orphaned" families out there, though. Sheesh. What a mess this was! jillaine 14:05, 29 December 2008 (EST)

Savage on Morse [29 December 2008]

He lists 7 Johns and 8 Josephs. Here is an extraction of what he has to say. Perhaps you can match them up. With all the mindless merging going on, it is easy to see how easily confusion occurs.

vol. 3, p. 238

1. JOHN, Dedham, tailor, eldest s. of Samuel, b. in Eng. it is said, may have come bef. his f. freem. 13 May 1640, by w. Annis had Ruth, b. 3 June 1637; John, 8 June 1639; Samuel and Rachel, tw. bapt. 15 (not as Genealog. says 5) Mar. 1640, both d. young; Joseph, b. 3 Feb. bapt. 6 July 1641; Ezra, bapt. 4, but rec. b. 5 Feb. 1644; Abigail, 2, bapt. 8 Mar. 1647; Ephraim, 19, bapt. 30 July 1648; Bethia, 28 Mar. bapt. 6 Apr. 1651; and Nathaniel, 2 May 13; rem. to Boston next yr. and 26 May 1657. His will, of 18 Dec. 1655, made in contempla. of a voyage to Eng. pro. 18 June 1657, by the Notary wh. witness. it, name w. Annis, and the eight ch.

Yes, I found him and Annis in Boston. I'm going to work on them later. jillaine 14:11, 29 December 2008 (EST)

2.JOHN, Charlestown 1637, rem. to Dedham the same yr. next to Boston.

3.JOHN, Boston, tailor, m. 24 Dec. 1652, Mary Jupe, niece of Robert Keayne, had Mary, b. 20 Apr. 1654; was prob. the freem. of 1654, and went home, Nov. 1654, and did not ret.

4. JOHN, Dedham, s. of Samuel went home and came back in the Speedwell, July 1656, aged 40; and was the person whose d. is ment. 26 May 1657. It has caus. some confus. and much uncert. that the John of Dedham and he of Boston, both tailors, should both have gone home so near. in the same yr. both die near the same time, but one [which?] return. to die on our side of the water; yet it may be overcome by aid of the wills. In that ship, at that time, came the first Quakers to our country.

I *think* this is the same as John #1 above. jillaine 14:11, 29 December 2008 (EST)

He was freem. 1669, serv. as a commissary in Philip's war, and d. says the Genealog. 25 Oct. 1678, but in the Appendix makes erron. that event on the same day of next yr. leav. wid. Elizabeth who applied to governm. for compensat. on acco. of his serv.

1.JOSEPH, Ipswich 1642, prob. from Co. Suffolk, Eng. had Dorothy, and s. Joseph and John, of wh. one, if not both, came over bef. him, and d. Hannah, made his will 24 Apr. 1646, and d. Sept. foll.

This is Joseph married to Dorothy (Barber apparently), settled in Ipswich. His 1646 will names the sons that went on to Watertown. jillaine 14:11, 29 December 2008 (EST)

I've got them in my notes, but haven't worked on them yet. jillaine 14:11, 29 December 2008 (EST)

4.JOSEPH, Watertown, s. of Joseph of the same, m. 12 Apr. 1661, Susanna, d. of William Shattuck, had Susanna, b. 11 Jan. 1663; Esther, 11 Sept. 1664; rem. to: Groton, there was freem. 1672, and had Joseph, 11 Nov. 1667; Samuel, 4 Sept. 1670; Mary, 11 Feb. 1672; and Hannah, 7 Apr. 1674, to wh. Dr. Bond adds Jonathan, without a date, and the assiduous genealogist of the name adds that he was b. a. 1680, while on the same page he makes the f. d. 1677 wh. is right, for the wid. m. 5 July 1678, John Fay, wherefore I doubt, unless the Morse genealog. be wrong here. That author makes the b. of the s. in the same yr. he tells me, wherein the f. d. 1667.

I've got the beginnings of this family cleaned up. jillaine 14:11, 29 December 2008 (EST)

Thanks, Scot. BTW, I tend not to use Savage for more than clues as to where to look elsewhere. In terms of these above, I didn't touch Newbury... yet. But I'm a bit burned out having done this all day. Need a break. jillaine 14:05, 29 December 2008 (EST)

Good work, obviously, Savage is at best a secondary source, but I have found it very helpful over the years and usually very reliable if not somewhat difficult to read. They, Like Jacobus with the Barbour collection, did a good job of sorting and piecing together a lot of individual records into a coherent body of information.

Strangely,as with the previous Brooks mess, I am connected through a single individual, in both cases, a wife of Richard Norcross, who m 1st Mary Brooks dau of Henry and secondly Susannah Hayden, widow of William Shattuck.
