From John Eaton (20): John Eaton's Alternate Death Date [1 August 2011]

According to Hoyt, I:148, John Eaton made his will Sep. 12, 1682, died either Nov. 1, 1682 (Salisbury Vital Records) or Oct. 30, 1682 (probate), with (apparently) proving of the will and estate inventory Nov. 28 and Dec. 26, 1682 (Hoyt does not specify which was which).

"BENJAMIN COLLINS, of Salisbury, married Nov. 5, 1668, Martha, daughter of John Eaton, had Mary, born Jan. 8,1670, John 1673, Samuel Jan., 1676, Ann April 1, 1679, Benjamin May 29 1681, and Ephraim Sept. 30, 1683, and the father died Dec. 10, following." - Whittemore, 98.

"Benjamin Collins … of Salisbury, m. Nov. 5, 1668[S], Martha(3) Eaton (John(2)), John"(1)). He was a householder of S. in 1677; d. Dec. 10, 1683[S]; inv. est. Jan. 3, adm. Est. March 25, 1684." - Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, I:112.

"Collins, Benjamin, (died) Dec. 10, 1683." - Vital Records of Salisbury, 542.

It appears to me that the alternate death date for John Eaton came from a misreading of Whittemore when he says, "the father died Dec. 10, following," referring to the father of the children named just prior rather than the father of his wife. A review of Hoyt and/or the Salisbury VR. makes it reasonably clear which of these men died when.--jaques1724 15:34, 1 August 2011 (EDT)
