Person talk:Ivyl Greenley (1)

Several comments about Ivyl Greenley life story. Some of the paragraphs on her dad ought to be put on Herbert T. Greenley page as well, as they are all about him, not Ivyl, albeit part of her 'life story'.

Herb Greenley is listed as living with his daughter, Zelda, on the property of the "State Hospital for the Insane" in the 1930 US Census. Both he and Zelda are listed as 'attendants', The record is for Washington Twp, Buchanan county, Iowa.

As noted earlier, Dorothy Ruth Quass was born in 1933, so was NOT the newborn Ivyl states she saw on the Ralph Quass farm. Louis Wayne was some 18 months old, a toddler and may have been the 'baby' visited.

One might add some notes about Jean and Pat while the family lived in Madelia in the paragraph with sons, Ken and Don. Her story seems 'biased' without mention of the daughters. Inserting it in editorial format may 'work'.

Herbert T. Greenley is listed as a farm laborer in the 1900 US Census living on the Enfield farm in Farley Twp, Dubuque, Iowa. He is listed at 18 years old

In the 1910 US Census, dated 23 April, Herb and his wife, Alice are listed as living in Center Twp, Dubuque county, Iowa and his occupation is Mail deliverer, rural. Alice, his wife is listed as a housewife. Additionally, they are listed as being married 3 months, implying a January, 1910 marriage, NOT a June marriage.

When Herbert was 33 years old, he was listed as married and a mail deliverer living in Farley twp, Dubuque, Iowa. There is no date on the certificate, just his age. He is listed as owning a house/farm with a value of $4,000. I have a copy of the 'certificate'. His education is listed as 4 years 'common', 4 years 'elementary' and 1 year of high school, no graduation.

Herbert T. Greenley also registered for the WW I draft. I have a copy of his registration.

Ivyl mentioned to her son, Ken, that the first house she and her husband lived in Independence was a block or two (more?) north of the court house on the same street, a small brick home. It may still be standing.

Ivyl worked at Dayton's Southdale in the maternity clothing department, thus she wore a nursing uniform to imply authority as a sales clerk. She worked in the newborn nursery department at Methodist Hospital, specializing in pre-mature births which became a passion when she worked as a nurse in San Diego in the newborn nursery there till her retirement. Forget the name of the hospital, Grossmont, I think, but it was not far from where they lived in San Diego.

It is interesting Ivyl didn't mention living in Sumner Iowa for a couple of years, living in Marshall, Minnesota, living in Madelia when Jean was born there, then moving Sumner, Iowa while her oldest was in Kindergarten. She lived in Marshall while her oldest attended the first part of 2nd grade, finishing 1st grade there. They moved back to Madelia where her oldest child finished 2nd grade and the family was for all intents and purpoese raised there. They moved to St Louis Park in the summer of 1957, living on Brookside Avenue till they moved to Los Angeles in 1962.

She and her husband and youngest daughter moved to Los Angeles in July of 1962, spending the 4th enroute driving. They moved from an an apartment in Los Angeles to their home in San Diego around 1964 where she spent the rest of her days.
