Where did birth date come from? [11 July 2009]

I question the birth date of 2 Nov 1643 and cannot tell where it came from. I haven't found it (which by itself, means nothing) and reputable sources cite a different date (Abt. 1646) which is supported by his age on a gravestone. The register of births of Plymouth Colony started 1647/48, so it is not clear how a birthdate in 1643 in Plymouth, as it appears on this page, would be known.
