Misreading Savage? [6 July 2009]

One is always guessing where unsourced data comes from.

Source:Savage, James. A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Vol. 3, p. 130, says "[Lumpkin,] William, Yarmouth 1643, by w. Thomasine had Thomasine, b. 1626, who m. Samuel Mayo of Barnstable; and John Sunderland for sec. h.; perhaps Hannah, who prob. m. John Gray; ano. d. m. an Eldridge; but no s. and d. 1671. His will, of 23 July 1668, names his w. Thomasine."

Could this be misconstrued to suggest Hannah Mayo m. John Gray and d. abt. 1671 as shown on this page? If so, it is a clear misreading of the passage, possibly due to Savage's crabbed style that valued paper more than clarity.

The John Gray mentioned in this passage appears to be the only Gray in Yarmouth according to Source:Joshua Gray of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, and his descendants (429036). "...there can little question that his wife was a daughter of William Lumpkin of Yarmouth." His son, John Gray, Jr. has a wife Hannah, who is named on Jr.'s inventory dated 1 Jun 1674 [ibid, p. 105]. This Hannah did not die in 1671 obviously.

Nor as it turns out, is she thought to be a Hannah Mayo, as on p. 106 it quotes Col. John Gorham's "Wast Book", "Jabez Gorham maryd Widdow Gray Sister to Sary Sturgis moved to Bristoll". Jabez Gorham's wife was Hannah and the only Hannah Gray in Yarmouth would appear to be the widow of John Gray, which suggests the wife of John Gray was Hannah Sturgis. --Jrich 10:23, 3 July 2009 (EDT)

The marriage to John Gray was removed to fix a duplicate page for John Gray and Hannah Sturgis, which appears to be the correct identification, not this Hannah Mayo. See Family:John Gray and Hannah Sturgis (1). --Jrich 10:53, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
