Person talk:George Bliss (2)

Changed his father [9 December 2010]

This George Bliss had been tied to father Thomas Bliss (and brother Jonathan and sisters Elizabeth and Mary). This was based on information taken from the 1881 book Genealogy of the Bliss Family in America, from about the year 1550 to 1880 by John Homer Bliss (second edition in 1904 by Henry Putnam Bliss).

In 1913, Charles Arthur Hoppin published The Bliss Book: A Romantic History of the Bliss Family from the Time of its Beginning, in England, to its Advent into America. In spite of its title, it is more grounded and based on more solid research than the 1881 book by John Homer Bliss. It includes the statement (pages 15-16) 'The story printed in 1881 as to our Blisses in Belstone was only a story, flimsy and unsupported. ... No person of the name of Bliss ever lived at Belstone or adjacent thereto before 1800.' The book goes on to provide evidence that George of Newport was the son of John Blisse of Preston Parva, Northamptonshire, England (namely, that George was mentioned in John's will).

I have removed George from the family of Thomas Bliss and added him to the family of John Bliss (as per Hoppin). If anyone has a reason to disagree with this change (other then the discredited 1881/1904 book), please continue the dialogue here or on the page of Thomas Bliss.
