Discussion of conflicting surname information [18 June 2014]

Two conflicting sources have been used to try to determine Elizabth's maiden name. Both are listed below so they are easily accessible to the viewer:

FIRST:

History of St. Joseph County, Indiana
Chas. C. Chapman & Co.
Chicago, 1880
Union Twp
Joseph T. Jackson was born in Knox County, Ohio, January, 1831. His parents, John and Elizabeth (EAGER) Jackson, were natives of Columbia County, Pa., and were of Irish and Scotch descent; they left Pennsylvania in October, 1828, going to Ohio, and from there to this county in the spring of 1854. His father settled on the place on which Mr. Jackson is now living, in sections 13 and 18, of this township; he died here in the year of 1865, aged 59 years; his mother died on Dec. 17, 1879, at the advanced age of 79 years. In 1862 Mr. Jackson married Mary Hupp, daughter of Michael and Caroline Hupp, of this township; they had 4 children: Edward, Carrie B., Grace and Maud. Mrs. J. died Nov. 18, 1877, and in June, 1879 he was married to Louisa Young, daughter of Philo and Susan Young, formerly of Marshall County, Ind., but living in Kansas. His son, Edward, is attending school at Valparaiso, Ind. Mr. Jackson is one of the successful farmers of this township; has 315 acres of good farming land. P.O. Lakeville.

SECOND:

"History of Columbia and Montour Counties, Pennsylvania"
Battle, J. H.
A. Warner & Co., Chicago, 1887
Pg 439
B. Frank Edgar, farmer, P. O. Stillwater, is a grandson of James EDGAR, a native of the State of New York, who removed to Benton, Penn., thence to this [Fishingcreek] township in the latter part of the last century and died in the State of Ohio, whither he had later removed. His [James'] children, all deceased, were
John, married Hester Zimmerman, died in Indiana;
Robert, married Susannah McHenry, died in Benton Township;
Martha, wife of Moses McHenry, died in this [Fishingcreek] township;
Ellen, wife of Elias McHenry (brother of Moses), also died here;
Elizabeth, wife of John Jackson, died in Indiana;
Edward, married and died in Ohio;
Teann, wife of Silas McHenry, died in Ohio.
James, the youngest, was the father of our subject [B. Frank Edgar]. James was born on the farm where his father resided, in this township, August 22, 1806, and died April 16, 1883, aged twenty-six years and seven months.

Conclusion: [18 June 2014]

So the above two records both speak of Elizabeth Eager and/or Elizabeth Edgar who married John Jackson. The first bio says the family's name was Eager and many family trees have said John Jackson married Elizabeth Eager. But since the second record gives us information about Elizabeth's BROTHERS, I believe it safe to rely on the record of the gravemarker of her brother Robert EDGAR as helpful information to backup the surname found in the second family history. Robert Edgar's Find-a-Grave memorial page is here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8240531. The photo of the gravemarker shows that Robert used the spelling EDGAR. The 1850 census also spells Robert's name as Edgar. Now possibly in later years the brother James began to spell his name as EAGER; but it was surely first spelled EDGAR as in the second bio containing the record of the whole family. The Jacksons, McHenrys and Edgars of Columbia County, Pennsylvania were very much intermarried families.--janiejac 02:00, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
