death date [21 May 2012]

I removed a death date of 1799.

First, the presentation on this page does not engender much credibility. The page gives the name as Bachda Winship and the VR clearly says Martha was born in this year in this family: were fingers on the wrong keys of the keyboard? Second, the death date of a woman cannot be known without knowing the married name or a death record under her maiden name, and neither is provided. Finally, the death date only gives a year, not a date, so even though there is an appropriate death record in 1799, there can to be no assurances it is the death that was meant. These suspicions might be allayed if sources were present, but they were not.

Even searching the whole Internet, I get nothing for Bachda Winship. I have change the name field to Martha.

Regarding the death in 1799, there is a Martha Winship who dies 10 Jan 1799 in Lexington, but she is the wife of Jonathan Winship. Jonathan and Martha Winship had children Esther b. 1796 and Moses b. 1798 before Martha died. Both children died before adulthood. Jonathan remarried in 1800 to "Elisabeth Coggen of Natick" according to Lexington VRS, p. 161.

Now I cannot actually be sure that this death of Jonathan's wife is the death intended by this page since neither the marriage, nor the precise death date was specified on this page, but it is the only death record I can find that could possibly be the source of the 1799 death date. If Martha never married as this page shows, it clearly is not a match. So the possibility of this date being correct depends on my ability to prove Jonathan Winship married his cousin Martha Winship making her the Martha who d. 1799.

None of my standard authorities for Lexington is much use. Hudson's History of Lexington, p. 2:774, does not know the maiden name for Jonathan's wife Martha. Neither is there is any marriage record in Lexington VRs for Jonathan Winship and Martha ???, nor Martha Winship and anybody. Nor does Hudson show on, p. 2:769, any marriage for Martha, d/o Isaac. But widening the search, there is a Bible record published in Source:NEHGR, p. 122:187, that lists the marriage of Jonathan Winship and Martha Newton on 10 May 1795, and follows that with Jonathan's remarriage in 1800 to Elizabeth Coggin, to confirm that it is talking about the same Jonathan. Thus it appears this death date was the result of naive name matching and that it is erroneous. --Jrich 23:54, 21 May 2012 (EDT)
