Person talk:Anthony Thacher (1)

Antony Thacher and journey on the James [26 August 2014]

There are several examples of Antony Thacher's signature, and in all of them he signs his name "Antony", not "Anthony". This could be due to his Latin training where he would have written his name Antony, but if he signed his name that way, I consider it to be his true name, especially since there is no birth record that shows how his name was spelled.

I am a direct descendant of Antony and still live in the same town he founded in 1639. According to my family's information, he sailed on the James on 6 Apr 1635 and arrived at Newbury in June. Since he is said to have married 6 weeks before the sailing, that would put his marriage date at approx. 23 Feb 1635.

Antony was significantly older than Elizabeth, as he was born in 1588 or 1589, according to the Totten genealogy. This would make sense, as Elizabeth was his second wife.--LadyKate 01:42, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm confused as to the page where Antony's year of birth is found in the Totten genealogy! It must be on different pages in the different versions of the volumes on achive.org. I just looked again and found it in part IV, pgs. 68/9. Anyway, it's a fascinating account and worth sifting through!--LadyKate 11:35, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, one of the shortcomings of our source system is distinguishing between originals and reprints. The original was published in a magazine [1], the page you were citing was from a reprint [2]. Same information. I didn't realize. I'll put back the reprint page number. --Jrich 15:24, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
