PHILLIPS -- Friends here have learned of the open house which honored Mrs. Zernie Webber, Phillips, on the occasion of her 97th birthday at her mobile home in Largo, Fla. on Feb 20. The affair arranged by her daughter, Mrs. Opal Smith, was attended by more than 80 friends. Many were Maine residents wintering in Florida. Phillips was well represented with the St. Petersburg and area groups all present. Assisting Mrs. Smith as hostesses were Mrs. Beryl Armitage, Springvale, Mrs. Everdene Walden, Rangeley, and Mrs. Kathie Montford, Largo. Keith Montford circulated the guest book. It was "a big day" for the gracious little honored guest who is this town's second oldest resident. She was the recipient of a corsage, money, gifts, flowers, plants and well over 100 congratulatory cards. A decorated birthday cake was served with other refreshments. Zernie Stinchfield Webber is a native of Madrid, the daughter of George E. and Cora Stinchfield. She often reminsces concerning her years as a teacher in the old one-room country schoolhouses and is one of the few authorities remaining on "the old days and ways.' She was married to Bonney Webber, Phillips, who died in 1966. Two children, Mrs. Lucille Webber Warren and Coleman Webber, are deceased. Mrs. Webber and her daughter, make their summer home in the attractively renovated West Phillips church, going to their Gulf View Mobile Park home during the winter. Mrs. Webber is a member of Phillips Congregational UCC; the Ladies Social Union and Phillips Area Senior Citizens, as well as Sandy River Grange, Madrid, and Franklin County Retired Teacher's Association.
