Facts and Events

Marriage 14 Oct 1868 Algoma, Kent, Michigan, United Statesto Esther Johnson
Death[1][2][4][3] 23 Feb 1871 Algoma, Kent, Michigan, United States
Burial[3] Myers Cemetery, Sparta, Kent, Michigan, United States
Probate[1] 2 Mar 1871 Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, United States

At the time of marriage he and Althea lived in Zorra, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada. Based on the birth places of their children, they moved to Michigan 1835-1838. In 1840 they lived in Bristol Twp., Lapeer County and in 1844 he purchased land and is listed as an elector in that township. In 1860 he was a widower and farmer in Almont, Lapeer County. In 1864, he purchased land in Algoma Twp., Kent County.

He probably is a decendent of Richard Edgerton who came to America in the 1600s, settling in Connecticut. For a very excellent reference of the Edgerton family, see this free website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~edgerton/

The above site includes Curtis and Amy Edgerton as parents of Zeno They are not included here for the following reasons: In the 1858 probate records for guardianship of John and Lofelia Edgerton, insane children of Curtis and Amy, the names of their siblings and heirs are listed and Zeno is not included. Also, when John and Lofelia died in 1902 and 1922, their probate files included a listing of surviving siblings or their surviving heirs. Zeno's children are not mentioned. This omission is indicative because Zeno's son, Joseph, was a neighbor in Antrim County, of Curtis and Amy's grandson, Norvell Churchill, and another grandson, Jason Churchill, requested that one of his Civil War pictures be given to George Edgerton, Zeno's son. Additionally, the History of St. Clair County states that Curtis and Amy's son Clarence was one of nine children. If we include Zeno, the number would be ten. Clearly there is a relationship between Curtis and Zeno who were located in similar areas in New York, Oxford Canada and Eastern Michigan. It appears that the relationship of Zeno to Curtis and Amy is other than parent/son.

FATAL ACCIDENT - A shocking accident occurred in the woods in Ensley township, Newaygo county on the 23d ult, resulting in the death of Mr. Zeno Edgerton of Algoma, Kent county. The unfortunate man was engaged in felling trees, and while cutting one loose from the stump, the tree having fallen and lodged in a binding position - a part of it flew sideways and struck one of his legs below the knee, and cut if off apparently - says our informant - as smoothly as it could have been done with a broad ax. The severed foot, in its boot was left where he stood and he was thrown bodily about twenty feet. He was immediately taken to the nearest house and a Physician called, but death relieved him of his sufferings in a few hours after the accident.

ACCIDENT AND DEATH -- On Thursday last, a man seventy odd years of age, by the name of Edgerton, residing some ten miles North West of Cedar Springs, while engaged in cutting timber, in the woods, met with a sad accident, which was the cause of his death. While Mr. Edgerton was in the act of making his way from under a falling tree, he tripped and fell, falling across a log, where the tree fell upon him, cutting his left leg entirely off below the knee.
Dr's. Ford and Chester, of this place, were the officiating Surgeons, who amputated the limb; but from the amputation, and severe injuries, he survived but a short time.
