Winfield married Levinia Jane Samuell February 27, 1873 in Mason County, Illinois. They had seven children: Gertrude, Nathan, Verna, Estella, Albert E., Myrtle A. and Pearl L. Sutton. Levina preceded him in death.

From Family Tree Maker CD Vol.3, Record #5835 (1996): Winfield and his first wife Levinia lived for a while on a farm near Chapman, NE. One day when they were away, their house burned down and they returned to Mason Co., IL. Back in Illinois, he and his brother, Ben, raised horses for a while. Levinia died of TB in 1883 and by the next year Nathan, Verna, and Myrtle had died.

He then married Letitia Lynn March 12, 1884 in Cass County, Illinois. They had six children: John W., Benjamin, Clara A., William S., Ella and Anna L. Sutton. Letitia also preceded him in death.

He then married Alice Pratt.
