- ↑ The evidence for William's birth is indirect. John Wright's baptism record says that his father's occupation was "toll-gate keeper;" from this we infer that the William and Alice who are listed on the baptism records of William (1819), Samuel (1821), John (1831) and Susan (1834) are the same William and Alice who appear in the 1841 (Soham, "Tollgate Keeper") and 1851 (Chesterton, "Tollgate Collector") censuses. Note that, if this is true, there one child in the 1841 census that hasn't been found in the baptism records (Brooks; the baptism record for Josiah is suspect as it gives the mother's name as Mary).
William's age is given as 40 [i.e., 40-44] in the 1841 census and 56 in the 1851 census; the latter gives his birthplace as Stretham.
There are a number of baptism records for William Wrights in the appropriate period in Cambridgeshire, but none of them are in Stretham.
- ↑ This is a guess based on the absence of good matches in the 1861 census.
