William Wolf was born in Loudoun Co., VA the fifth child of Adam and Susannah Steinbrenner/Stoneburner Wolf on August 8, 1805. While an infant the family moved to Columbiana Co., OH. He grew to manhood there where his father was a farmer. He married Catharina Fetterhoff April, 1832 there.

William and Catharina started their family here working on a farm where 10 [John b. 1832, Susannah b. 1833, Andrew b. 1834, Jacob b. 1836, Adam b. 1837, Joseph b. 1839, Mary Ann b. 1841, Catharine A. b. 1843, Sarah Ann b. 1845 and Magdalena b. 1848] of their 17 children were born, 15 of whom lived to adulthood. It was in 1848 that the family moved to Troy township, Ashland, OH. Here 5 more children [William b. 1849, Amos b. 1852, Lydia b. 1854, Frank b. 1856 and Phebe b. 1858] were born. It has not been determined where the 2 missing children fit into the family by this researcher.

While the family was living here the Civil War broke out. Four of the Wolf sons enlisted in units from Ohio. Jacob Wolf enlisted in Co. B 1st Light Artillery, Ohio. It is believed that John, Andrew and Adam each served too. The family moved to Steuben Co., IN in 1864 with the exception of sons, John and Adam who stayed in Ohio. The sons serving in the War did not return to their home until July 1865.

William Wolf purchased land in Steuben township, Steuben county. There are remnants of the original home farm consisting of a windmill and a stone retaining wall near a barn. It is west of Mt. Zion Church and cemetery where many family members are buried.
