"The late Mr. William Watkins of Wern-y-cwm, who died in 1896, was also the owner of the estates of Ty-newydd, Gelli-wig and Croes-Philip-Jack. His second surviving son [Henry William Watkins] is the present Archdeacon of Durham, who, after a distinguished career at King's College, London, of which he became a Fellow, and at Balliol College, Oxford, of which he was a Scholar, was appointed Professor of Logic and Moral Philosophy at King's College, Warden of St. Augstine's College, Canterbury, and Professor of Hebrew in the University of Durham. Bishop Lightfoot made him a Canon of Durham, and successively Archdeacon of Northumberland, of Auckland, and Durham. He was in 1890 Bampton Lecturer at Oxford."
