WALTON, William Merland, Ph.D. William Merland Walton, Ph.D. died peacefully at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital just after midnight on Sunday (August 27, 2006). Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 21, 1911, "Bim" received his BA (1934), MA (1936) and Ph.D. (1947) from the University of Toronto, where he studied under Etienne Gilson and Jacques Maritain, leading Thomistic scholars. Bim's area of expertise was medieval philosophy, centering on the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas. He first taught philosophy at the University of Toronto, and then at universities and colleges in the Eastern U.S., including Yale University, St. Joseph's College, and Wesleyan as well as contributing to leading journals and delivering papers at conferences. He served on the executive council of the American Catholic Philosophical Association from 1956-59 and as its President in 1960. he was a member of the American Maritain Association. His biography is contained in Who's Who in America. In 1985, Bim and his wife, Margie, returned to Canada, living in Oakville, Ontario. Bim was a third degree knight in the Knights of Columbus, Marian Council #3881. He is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Margaret MacDonald "Margie". He is mourned by his daughter, Mary Ryan of Oakville; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Laurie Walton of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; his granddaughters, Melanie Ryan, Adrianne, Marcella and Joceline Walton; and his great-grandson, Vito. He was laid to rest beside his beloved Margie in Orillia, Ontario.
