LONG POINT ? William J. Tullis, 80, of Long Point, died at 9:17 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2004, at St. Mary?s Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Monsignor Jerome Ham, pastor of St. Anthony Church, will be the celebrant.

Organist Don Cassady will accompany soloist Dave Quinn. Songs will include, ?In the Garden,? ?He,? ?You Are Mine,? and ?How Great Thou Art.?

Lector for the Mass will be his son, Gregory Tullis. Gift bearers will be daughters, Cynthia Ingold and Julie Jonen. Altar servers will be Jacob and Jeremy Strabala.

Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery with full military rites to be conducted by Streator American Legion Post #217 and Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1492 including honor guard, firing squad, taps, and flag folding. Christopher Lechner will play taps. Long Point American Legion Post #1217 members will be present.

Pallbearers will be grandson, Ryan Ingold; sons-in-law, Scott Ingold and James Jonen; and nephews, David Winterrowd, Daniel Yedinak and George McMullen.

Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters, Nichole Ingold and Lauren and Ashley Jonen; and nieces, Judy Burton and Marcia McMullen.

Also as honorary pallbearers will be the Third Degree members of Monsignor George A. Dzuryo Council #790 of the Knights of Columbus: Richard Bednar, Richard Killian, Jerry Trainor, Mike Vargovcik, Richard Schaibley and Merle Russell.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Hagi Funeral Home. A prayer service will be said at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born June 20, 1924, in Ancona, he was the son of William and Elizabeth (Jennett) Tullis. He married Marna R. Mills on April 19, 1952, at St. Anthony of Padua Church. The Rev. Philip Johnson, OFM officiated. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Gregory S. Tullis of Streator; daughters, Cynthia A. (Mrs. Scott) Ingold of Streator, and Julie R. (Mrs. James) Jonen of Joliet; four grandchildren; sisters, Jule M. Winterrowd of Streator, and Mary Evelyn Yedinak of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rita Greener.

He graduated from Ancona Grade School and was a 1942 graduate of Long Point High School, where he was the class valedictorian. He attended the University of Illinois.

He was a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force serving from March 19, 1943, to Dec. 22, 1945.

He farmed in the Long Point and Ancona areas and was a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Long Point, Ancona and Streator from April 1954 until his retirement July 1, 1988.

He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church.

As a member of the Illinois Rural Letter Carriers Association, he was past state president, past state vice president, past state secretary, past state treasurer and past national delegate.

As a member of Long Point American Legion Post #1217 for over 50 years, he was past commander, past adjutant and present finance officer.

He was a member of 40/8 Voiture #818 and had served as past Chef DeGare.

He was a past township supervisor of Long Point Township and served the Village of Long Point as a past village clerk.

He served on the Livingston County Draft Board.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #591; Monsignor George A. Dzuryo Council #790 Knights of Columbus as a Third Degree Knight; Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1492, Livingston County Farm Bureau, Old Timers Baseball Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and AARP.

Memorials may be directed to his church, Long Point American Legion Post #1217, or the donor?s choice.
