William was a sargent with the 3rd Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army, and was captured at Helena, Arkansas on 4 Jul 1863 and died of smallpox at the Gratiot Street Prison on 23 Aug 1863 and was buried there. John Taylor, William's father and two of William's brothers were reportedly incarcerated there and the story goes that they survived but John suffered quite a loss of health during his confinement. It is said that his wife brought them food at least once a month. (Ed Heitz - 15 Sep 2002 email).
