William J. Snyder, 98; Oldest in Lynn Township
William J. Snyder, who at 98 was Lynn Township's oldest resident, died Sunday at his home in New Tripoli R. 1.
He had been a farmer before retiring 38 years ago.
The Slatington native was 14 when his family moved to Lynn Township. His parents, the late Daniel and Sarah (Ettinger) Snyder, operated a creamery and farm between Stines Corner and Werleys Corner. They converted a grist mill into the creamery.
The Snyder creamery introduced systematic collection of milk in the area. As a youngster, Snyder hitched two horses to a large spring wagon and made the rounds of township farms before going to school.
Until that time, farmers had hauled their own milk to the Snyder farm where dairy products were separated by machinery.
When he married, he acquired a nearby farm. Later, he added the farm property where he had spent his boyhood.
His wife, Alice (Kressley) Snyder, died many years ago.
Snyder was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregation of St. Peter's Union Church, Lynnville, and was a charter member of the Junior Order of American Mechanics, New Tripoli.
Surviving are two sons, Fred D. of New Tripoli R. 1 and William E. of Summit Hill; two daughters, Edna and Mrs. Lillian Kistler, both of New Tripoli R. 1; a sister, Mrs. Mary A. Reimert of Rydal, Montgomery County; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Keller Funeral Home, New Tripoli, with viewing 7-9 p.m. tomorrow.
