- As per research by David Sneed:
William H. Sneed enlisted at Cumberland Gap in "Patterson's Company of Engineers" December 1861. These engineers engaged in building fortifications, bridges, roads, etc. They are the unsung heros of the War of the Rebellion. Without the engineers, the army didn't move. I believe William H. joined at age 13. This particular outfit was chosen because two first cousins, and next door neighbors, John S. Sneed and James M. Sneed, had joined a month earlier. (1850 Census) This unit was involved in the following battles: Mill Springs, KY; Cumberland Gap; Chikasaw Bayou; Black River; Seige of Wicksburg. This unit came under heavy enemy fire while constructing a pontoon bridge in prelude to the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, which was a prelude to the Seige of Vicksburg. I believe William H. received a shotgun wound to one shoulder or arm. He was discharged because of disability at Milliken's Bend, LA, on April 9, 1863. He would have been 15 or 16 years of age. Cousin John survived the war and was "mustered out" at Louisville in 1865. cousin James was less fortunate. He died in the camp hospital at Milliken's Bend, LA, on March 23, 1863 (cause unknown by me). He was buried at possibly a national cemetary in Milliken's Bend, LA, at age 14-15, a Private. Milliken's Bend is approx. 30-40 minutes NW of Vicksburg.
