Biography

William Henry Smith, son of Charles F. Smith and Rebecca Beason, was born on 25 January 1849 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. William appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of his parents in the 2nd ward of Moyamensing, Philadelphia. He appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of his parents in Philadelphia's 2nd ward. William was a seaman in 1870. He appeared on the census of 1870 in the household of his parents in the 3rd district of Philadelphia's 1st ward.

William married Martha Clare, daughter of Peter Curtis Clare and Caroline Amelia Martin, on 26 August 1870 in Philadelphia. William and Martha's marriage was apparently troubled, as William sometimes went live with relatives down at 'the Neck' in South Philadelphia when he was arguing with his wife. William was as a gas worker in 1880.

The 1880 census showed William and Martha living on Whisner Street in Philadelphia with their children Mary and Carrie. William was a produce dealer in 1900. William and Martha appeared on the census of 1900 at 1220 Mercy Street with their children William, George and Martha their son-in-law John Murphy Daniels, and Martha's brother Peter Boyer Clare. William has not been located in the 1910 census and 1920 census. His wife Martha was living with other family members.

William Henry Smith died on 11 February 1926 at Stone House Lane, Philadelphia, at age 77 of apoplexy with contributory hemiplegra. He was buried on 15 February 1926 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia.
