Fr. Joseph McGrath, OFM, was born July 13, 1905 in Buffalo, N.Y. He and his brother, Fr. Vianney McGrath, OFM, received the habit together at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1928 and professed temporary vows one year later. Together, they made their solemn profession in 1932 and were ordained in 1953.
Fr. Joseph’s first assignment was to the Southern missions, where he spent four years in Asheville, N.C., and two years as superior in Lenoir, N.C. After several years of parochial work in New York City and Buffalo, Fr. Joseph went to St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., where he spent the last six years of his life teaching. He also served as pastor of St. Anthony’s Parish in Yulan, N.Y.
He died on April 2, 1952 in Callicoon. Fr. Joseph was 46 years old, a professed friar for 22 years and a priest for 16 years.
