1871 census (from Ian Stoyle): "William MAY, 37, master mason, his wife Emma, 32, grocer, and their children, Emily 12, Louisa 10, Henry 7, William 5 and Tom 1, were all living somewhere in Silver Street in 1871. Emily was a Scholar at the time, though I can't see her (or Louisa) listed in the village school admissions register (which suggests she may have been a pupil at one of the ephemeral dame schools held in private houses)"

From Ian Stoyle (Dec 2000): I couldn't quite grasp myself the "cryptic" paragraph I once wrote about the latter! Essentially, Doris Milford, whose legs you can see straddling the gutter up Jericho Street as she photographed Thurstan Shaw taking a photo of the floods on p.50 of my book, married Sid May, who was upset that the Mays did nothing to help his mother after the death of his father, William May, during the first World War. Since we wrote to each other, both Sid and Doris have died, and I fear the full story has been lost with them."
