Facts and Events
-Part of the Biographical and historical memoirs of Mississippi Volume 1 published by the Godspeed publishing company of Chicago in 1891. The information begins with Colonel John South Lewis, Son of Aaron Lewis, of Kentucky and Virginia. William H. H. Lewis was born June 28 1842 and while being educated at Centenary College, Mississippi and in the sophomore class, he entered the Confederate army, joining the Sixteenth Mississippi Regiment as orderly Sargeant, and soon after was promoted to first lieutenant for daring and brilliant service, and was finally killed in 1963 at Graines' farm. In the Army he was conspicuous for his daring and military genius, and as a student before the war, stood at the head of his classes. He would unquestionably have graduated with first honors had he remained at school. He was very highly respected by the faculty and the students. |
