William E. Kindel, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Clifton, VA on Sunday, June 26, 2011. Beloved husband of Hope D. Kindel for nearly 64 years and father of Lynn Richardson, Janet Shlanta, Carole Whetzel and Sue Churchwell. He is also survived by three grandchildren; Nathan, Michael, and Kimberly and two great grandchildren, Victoria and Ryan. He was preceded in death by his firstborn son, Kenneth.

Born in Bluffton, Indiana, he grew up in Villa Park, Illinois. Upon graduation from Purdue University in 1945 with a degree in Civil Engineering, he served in the U.S. Navy as an officer aboard LST 611. After completing his service in the Navy, he went to work for Chicago Bridge and Iron Works where he met his soon-to-be wife, Hope.

He subsequently went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Office of Chief of Engineers, where one of his most interesting accomplishments was the preliminary design for the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, FL.

Upon his retirement from the Army Corps of Engineers, he went to work for Fairfax County as Director of the Project Engineering Division, Public Works. His background and talent in engineering brought meticulous attention to detail in all that he accomplished and enjoyed.

Mr. Kindel had numerous and varied interests including flying, family camping trips when his daughters were growing up, fishing with his grandson, sailing in small boats, and woodworking where he crafted beautiful items including bird houses, feeders, and adorable Christmas reindeer.

After his children left home to start families and careers of their own, he got back into flying and enjoyed frequent flights and day trips with his wife, Hope, in their Beechcraft Skipper. Other activities they enjoyed together included daily, quiet morning walks at local parks and evening games of Scrabble. Mr. Kindel also enjoyed bowling in a senior league.

A member of Clifton Presbyterian Church since 1971, he was a devoted, loving husband and father who always put his family first, leaving behind a legacy of love and memories that will keep him alive in his family's hearts forever.

A graveside service will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on June 30, 2011 at 10 am. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis,
