Captain William Kelly (J.D. Newton's Dale Line) |
Was a sailing captain. For his retirement he built a house, which is still standing in Newton Stewart, very fine looking, named Borrowdale, after one of his ships. He sailed to Portland, OR, and Australia. (Owned his ships).
The Thomas Brocklebank was a ship built by Thos. & Jno. Brocklebank at Bransty, Whitehaven, launched 18th March 1847. She spent her whole 22 year career for the Brocklebank Line in the Calcutta trade. Her masters in that time included Capts. H. Ponsonby, J.Rorison (1855), Joughan, W.Kelly (1857), Jordain, Fletcher and W. Graham. Typically she carried a crew of 27.The Thomas Brocklebank was sold by Brocklebanks in 1869 to Cliff & Co. of Liverpool. The ship ended her career in the West Indies, wrecked on the Rosario Reef off Jamaica in 1878.
