He was Bonneville's secretary on his expedition to the west. He became a fur trader in the 1840s and was associated with the American Fur Co. He lived at Ft. Peck, Ft. Pierre, Ft. Clark and Ft. Union. He was in charge of Ft. Clark from 1856 to 1859 and of Ft. Union in 1863 until his death there in 1864. In his will, he left his assets to be divided among his children William, Alexander, Oscar and Mary Martha. Peter J. DeSmet was their guardian.
