DERR- HEMPHILL

CALLED TO REST

WILLIAM HEMPHILL DIED FRIDAY AFTERNOON FUNERAL MONDAY .

WILLIAM HEMPHILL was born in Ross county, Ohio, March 20, 1826, died May 18, 1906. aged 80 years, 1 month and 28 days. His parents were ANDREW and ANNA HEMPHILL. The later was born in Ross county, Ohio, in the year 1702. The former was a native of Kentucky, born March 24, 1799, and emigrated with her parents to Ohio settling in Ross county. They were married in the latter named county, thence moved to Highland county and subsequently came to Hardin county, Ohio, where Mr. HEMPH I LL died . The subject of this sketch came to Hardin county with his parents in 1833, where he grew to manhood under the sturdy influences of pioneer life. Mr. HEMPHILL first started out in life as a laborer, and after accumulating a sufficient amount of funds bought eighty-five acres of land in 1848, being the land upon which his parents settled in 1833. He was married October 23, 1851, to MARY A. DERR, who was born in Wayne county, Ohio, November 22, 1827, a daughter of DAVI$ and DERR, both deceased; the former on December 6, 1896 (my note: should be 1866), the latter~April 30, 1875. Shortly after Mr. HEMPHILL's marriage he, with his wife, settled upon the land he had previously purchased, then almost a wilderness and by earnest toil and labor succeeded in clearing up the dense forest and making for themselves a comfortable home, where he reared his family and spent nearly the whole of his life. Mr. and Mrs. HEMPHILL are the parents of seven children, viz: JO$EPH $. , JOHN D. , JAME$, MR$. C. R. MAIN$, MR$. J. G. PATTER$ON J, MARY F. & WILLIAM $. Three of the seven, viz, JOHN, D. , MR$. C. R. MAIN$, &MI$$ MARY F. , have preceded him to the other shore. He united with the First Presbyterian church of Belle Center, Ohio, August 27, 1870, under the pastorate of Rev. H. M. Shockley and has lived ever faithful and true to his vows. Had Mr. HEMPHILL lived until October 23rd, he and Mrs. HEMPHILL would have been married fifty-five years. Mr. HEMPHILL was noted for his intelligence and excellent memory. He could go to church, hear a sermon and come home and tell it through from beginning to end. He always prayed that he might be conscious to the end and his prayer was answered. On the morning of his death when the family were going out to breakfast he said, "I can stay alone". And when he asked a blessing on them in the same, clear way that he had always done. In a few moments he called to them and his breath grew shorter and shorter until he ceased to breath. Yes, his was a peaceful passage from this world to the beautiful land beyond. What a comfort to friends ! The funeral services were conducted from the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Center by his pastor, Rev. w. A. Atkinson on Monday, May 21st, at 130 p.m. and his body was laid to rest , in Fairview cemetery, to await the resurrection of the just.
