William D. Hayes Funeral Tuesday in Grace Church
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday in St. Stephens Chapel of Grace Episcopal Church for William Davis Hayes, retired cattleman and rancher, who died Wednesday at his home, 306 W. Dale St. The Rev. J. Lindsey Patton, rector, and the Rev. Milton C. Johnson, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The Swan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hayes, who had long been ill, was the son of Joel Addison Hayes and Margaret Davis Hayes. He was the grandson of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. His mother was the eldest daughter of Jefferson Davis. He was born June 9, 1890, in what is now Hayes House at Colorado College. He attended Lawrenceville School, Colorado College and Colorado A and M College. He was a member of the El Paso County Pioneers Assn., and for many years was a deputy sheriff at Pueblo. He also was one of the original Boy scouts of Colorado Springs, and was an active member of the Historical Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alfrieda H. Hayes; a stepdaughter, Diann; a daughter by a former marriage, Elsie Train; one granddaughter; his brother, Jefferson Hayes Davis, Colorado Springs; a sister Mrs. Lucy B. Young, Norwood, and several nephews and nieces.
