William was born on the Metropolitan Board of Works Farm at Werribee.

He worked at Tommy Lieshman's farm milking cows by hand. He later worked at the MMBW farm at Werribee. His time there was interupted by WW2, during which he worked for Rheem. William worked for the MMBW on the outfall sewer until his retirement at age 65.

William was a member of the Werribee Urban Firebrigade for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Werribee and also of the ALP and the MUIOOF Lodge. He was a member of the Uniting Church and before that of the Presbyterian Church.
