William Richard was an illegitimate child. He was the son of a daughter of Littleton Gwin. His father was said to be named McCrary. He was raised by Littleton and Mary Polly Gwin. Dick, as he was called, was a large land owner of both Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties in Alabama. He was in the sawmill and lumber business as well as operated a cotton gin, grist mill and country store.
