According to John Fox, William was one of the heirs to 2000 acres of land in Tennessee by his uncle, William Mebane, brother to Frances.

William met an untimely death when he and some cousins were on a hunting expedition in Tennessee, and were killed by a band of Indians. One of his cousins who was killed was Hugh Tinnin.
